When we start learning something new, we often want to be great at it right away. I recall signing up for a holiday typing class. Back then, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typingย was a big deal.
I was excited and determined to become a typing pro. I figured out that the best way to get there was to type as fast as possible. But I was wrong! First, I had to learn that speed can be a disadvantage. Second, I realized that speed will never make you accurate, but accuracy will help you gain speed.
I noticed that the faster I tried to type, the more mistakes I made. Mavis, the ever-patient virtual teacher, kept reminding me to focus on getting the letters right. She promised speed would come later. But I didnโt want to slow down. I thought I could beat the process. But I learned the hard way: you canโt cheat growth. When you try to move faster than your current capacity allows, you multiply your mistakes and burnouts.
This lesson applies far beyond typing. It shows up in driving, too. New drivers often get so excited about moving quickly that they forget the goal is to stay in control. The truth is, weโre often conditioned to value speed over substance. But when we rush without mastery, weโre more likely to crash, whether itโs on the road or in life.
Once I shifted my focus from speed to accuracy, I started to improve. My confidence grew. It was not because I became a typing expert. In fact, I eventually lost interest in typing altogether. However, I learned something more valuable: you don't need to be an expert to move quickly. However, if you want to build real quality, you must focus on accuracy and stay consistent with the small things.
Hereโs the insight I want to leave with you: Sometimes, speed gets in the way of real success. Trying to move too fast can leave you feeling like a fraud, to others and yourself. Instead, start small. Do the little things well. Focus on accuracy.ย
Confidence doesnโt come from rushing to the top; it comes from showing up consistently and doing your best, even when it feels slow or unimpressive.ย When quality and confidence grow, success becomes something you can repeat across every area of your life.
